Semiconductor Sell-Off Pressures U.S. Stocks as Bank Earnings Begin
Published on October 13, 2026
A renewed semiconductor sell-off is pressuring U.S. technology shares as investors reassess the artificial-intelligence trade. The weakness comes as third-quarter bank earnings begin and higher oil prices and inflation expectations complicate the outlook for interest-rate-sensitive stocks.
Chip sell-off widens as earnings season begins
A renewed sell-off in semiconductor shares is emerging as the most significant near-term pressure point for U.S. equities, with investors questioning the durability of the artificial-intelligence trade while major banks begin reporting third-quarter results. Nasdaq futures fell 0.6% ahead of Tuesday’s session, while S&P 500 futures declined 0.1%, according to The Washington Post.
The weakness followed a sharp decline in memory stocks in Korea and spread into U.S.-listed technology companies. Photonics and optical names were among the largest decliners in the S&P 500 technology sector, with Lumentum, Ciena, Coherent and Corning each falling between roughly 6% and 9.5% in Monday trading, Investopedia reported.
The technology pullback contrasted with gains in energy shares as crude prices climbed amid Middle East disruptions. Brent crude rose above $106 a barrel on Tuesday, supporting energy companies including Exxon and Chevron, according to Ground News. The divergence left the broader market mixed: the Dow gained 195.60 points, or 0.38%, to close at 51,850.55 on Monday, while the S&P 500 fell 0.06% and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.44%, HDFC Sky reported.
Banks set the next test
The chip retreat is unfolding as the third-quarter reporting season moves into focus. Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase are among the first major U.S. banks scheduled to report, while market participants also await inflation data that could influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy, The Economic Times reported.
Higher oil prices and rising inflation expectations are adding another complication for growth stocks. A University of Michigan survey put year-ahead inflation expectations at 4.7% in October, a five-month high, according to Yahoo Finance.
What to watch
Investors will be watching whether semiconductor weakness broadens beyond memory and optical components, whether bank results offset pressure on technology shares, and how Wednesday’s consumer-price data affects rate expectations. Energy stocks will remain sensitive to further oil-market and geopolitical developments.
