Earnings optimism rotates investors toward industrials

U.S. stocks closed mostly higher on Tuesday as stronger-than-expected corporate results helped steady markets after a volatile period for technology shares. The clearest gains came from established industrial and consumer companies. 3M advanced 5.8% after reporting a stronger-than-expected profit, while Northrop Grumman rose 4.5%. Hasbro climbed 11.2% after saying revenue from its Magic: The Gathering game exceeded $600 million in a quarter for the first time. CP24

The earnings reaction was not uniformly positive. General Motors fell 6.8% despite beating analysts’ profit expectations. The automaker also announced a plan to return as much as $20 billion to investors through share repurchases, but the stock nevertheless declined amid investor concerns about its outlook. CP24

Housing data added to the market’s crosscurrents. Pending home sales fell 7.3% in September, significantly more than the 0.3% decline cited as the consensus estimate, while elevated mortgage rates continued to weigh on parts of Equifax’s business. Equifax shares nonetheless rallied 11.3% after the company reported better-than-expected summer-quarter profit. CP24 Yahoo Finance

What to watch

Investors will be watching whether additional earnings reports reinforce the rotation toward industrial and traditional blue-chip shares, or revive demand for technology stocks. The market’s response to company outlooks may remain as important as reported results, as shown by GM’s decline despite its profit beat and buyback announcement.
