Oil Surge Adds New Pressure to U.S. Stocks as Energy Shares Rally
Published on October 25, 2026
U.S. stocks ended a turbulent week lower as Brent crude climbed to $116.72 a barrel, its highest level since April, intensifying inflation and geopolitical concerns. Energy shares outperformed, while telecommunications stocks fell sharply after reports that SpaceX was seeking thousands of cell sites for a fourth wireless carrier. Investors now face a Federal Reserve meeting and a heavy slate of major corporate earnings.
Oil surge reshapes a bruising week for U.S. stocks
U.S. equities ended a volatile week lower on Friday as a sharp rise in crude prices added a new source of inflation and geopolitical risk to an already unsettled market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.23% to 52,215.16, the S&P 500 declined 0.52% to 7,623.68 and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.21% to 25,955.34, according to Futunn’s market recap.
Brent crude rose 3.1% to $116.72 a barrel, its highest level since April, while West Texas Intermediate settled at $103.27, up 3.82%, according to Odaily’s report. The reports attributed the move to attacks involving the Houthis and concern about a wider U.S.-Iran conflict, raising the prospect that energy costs could reinforce inflation pressures just as investors await the Federal Reserve’s policy decision.
Energy outperforms as defensive trade broadens
The energy sector was the session’s standout, gaining 2.51%, while technology rose 0.35% and most other S&P 500 sectors fell, Moneycontrol reported. Exxon Mobil and Chevron each reached new highs in the session, rising 2.79% and 2.88%, respectively, according to Odaily.
Oilfield-services company SLB also gained 7% after reporting third-quarter profit above Wall Street estimates, Moneycontrol said. The sector’s strength contrasted with declines of more than 1% in consumer staples, consumer discretionary and financials.
The broader week remained mixed: the S&P 500 fell 0.5%, the Nasdaq declined 0.7% and the Dow rose 0.4%, its third consecutive weekly gain, according to Moneycontrol. Telecommunications shares were another major pressure point after reports that SpaceX was seeking thousands of cell sites for a fourth wireless carrier. AT&T and T-Mobile each fell nearly 8%, while Verizon lost 1.2%.
What to watch
Investors will focus on the Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for October 28, alongside a heavy earnings calendar that includes Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, Caterpillar, Coca-Cola and Starbucks, according to Economic Times coverage. Oil’s next move, corporate spending plans and the Fed’s response to renewed inflation risks are likely to determine whether the market’s recent defensive rotation persists.
